The Permian-Triassic boundary in the South Yellow Sea, China and its palaeogeographical implications: A case study of CSDP-2 borehole

摘要The extension of the South China Plate (SCP) into the South Yellow Sea (SYS) and the stratigraphic structure of the Central Uplift of the SYS have been debated for decades. The study of the Paleozoic strata in the SYS is key to resolving these controversies. The continuous core of the Late Permian-Early Triassic strata in the SYS, recovered by the CSDP-2 borehole of the Continental Shelf Drilling Program (CSDP), represents the first drilling at the northeast edge of SCP to reveal the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB). Comprehensive analyses of palaeontology, lithostratigraphy, carbon isotopes, and geochronology have identified a continuous sequence of Upper Permian to Lower Triassic, correlating with the Changhsing and Yinkeng formations in the SCP. Five conodont zones, including the Clarkina wangi Zone, Clarkina orientalis Zone, Clarkina changxingensis Zone, Clarkina yini Zone, Hindeodus parvus Zone, have been recognized, with the first occurrence of Hindeodus parvus found in calcareous mudstone at a depth of 863.5 m. Notably, there is a marked decrease in abundance and diversity of fossil content above the level of 866.9 m, indicating a significant transition. Two episodes of negative excursions in delta 13Ccarb at depths of 863.26 m and 866.31 m mirror similar patterns in P-T sections from South China. The Zircon U-Pb SHRIMP dating of volcanic ash at 863.29 m yielded an age of 252.2 +/- 1.9 Ma, consistent with the global PTB age within the error range. This evidence unequivocally establishes the PTB at a depth of 866.9 m, marking the first determination of the PTB within the SYS at the northeastern edge of SCP. The convergence of Late Permian-Early Triassic lithostratigraphy, carbon isotope excursions, conodont strata, and U-Pb dating results in the SYS aligns remarkably with SCP, confirming the SYS as an extension of SCP during this period.
